Lili Cheng is Corporate Vice President and Managing Director of Microsoft Research New England,โฏMicrosoft Research New York City and Microsoft Research Montreal.โฏ The northeast research labs which focus on Machine Learning and the impact of AI on economics and society.ย ย
Prior to this role, Lili served as Corporate Vice President and CTO of the Business Applications Group in Cloud & AI, creating and overseeing Copilot Studio and the design and integration of business applications of AI including Sales, Service, Finance and the Frontline Workforce. This work began in Microsoft Research in 2015, with a vision of Conversation as a Platform and projects including: Microsoft Bot Framework, Azure Cognitive Services and agents including Xiaoice and Tay๐!ย ย
Lili has a long history of research in the areas of Social + Machine Learning.ย From 2009-2016, Lili ran FUSE Labs (Future Social Experience) under Ray Ozzie, which included teams across: Redmond, Cambridge Mass, and the machine learning group based in Cambridge England.ย Projects included Bing Social, which ingested the Twitter and Facebook firehose data and analyzed shared links to surface super fresh content. This used the second ever Azure account โ and was the first collaboration across the Azure team, Microsoft Research, and Bing!ย
Lili founded the Social Computing Research group in Microsoft Research and lead a project to reimagine Windows to automatically self-organize around people, projects, and events, modeling the way people โthink about their lives,โ where she moved to run the Windows user experience teams for Vista.ย Lili joined Microsoft in 1995, in the Virtual Worlds Group, where she worked on conversational experience and projects such as Comic Chat (opens in new tab).ย Prior to Microsoft she was part of Apple Computer’s Advanced Technology Group, where she developed QuickTime Conferencing and QuickTime VR.ย
Lili is also a registered architect, having worked in Tokyo and Los Angeles for Nihon Sekkei and Skidmore Owings and Merrill on commercial urban design and large-scale building projects. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineers and has taught at New York University, Cornell University, and Harvard University.ย
